The math, in plain English

How to Calculate Invoice Factoring Costs

To calculate invoice factoring costs, multiply the invoice amount by your factoring rate to get the fee, then subtract that fee from the invoice to get your cash in hand. A $3,000 freight invoice at a flat 2% rate carries a $60 fee, so you receive $2,940 — the same day, instead of waiting 30 to 60 days for the broker to pay.

The formula

Invoice amount − (Invoice amount × factoring rate) = Cash in hand

Four steps to your real number

  1. Start with the gross invoice

Use the full amount on the rate confirmation — line haul plus fuel surcharge, detention, layover, and any accessorials. Factoring is calculated on the gross, not on what you expect to clear.

  2. Apply the factoring rate

Multiply the invoice by the rate to get the fee. A flat rate charges the same percentage no matter how long the broker takes to pay. A tiered rate climbs the longer the invoice ages, so a 1.5% headline can finish above 4% on a slow-paying customer.

  3. Subtract every fee that is not the rate

Wire fees, ACH fees, monthly minimums, invoice-upload fees, application fees, and termination penalties all come off the same invoice. Two companies quoting the same rate can be dollars apart once these are added in. CFX charges a flat transparent rate with no hidden fees and $0 wire fees.

  4. Check the result against your cost per mile

Divide your net proceeds by the miles on the load. If that number is below your cost per mile, the load loses money whether you factor it or not — the rate was the problem, not the fee.

Worked example: a $3,000 load

A single dry van run, factored at a flat 2% with no wire fee. Rates vary by carrier, credit quality, and volume — this is illustrative industry math, not a quote.

Invoice (line haul + accessorials)
$3,000.00
Factoring rate (flat)
2%
Factoring fee
− $60.00
Wire fee
− $0.00
Total deducted
− $60.00
Funded the same day$2,940.00

Run five loads like that in a week and you are working with $14,700 today instead of chasing $15,000 forty-five days from now. That gap is the whole point: the fee buys back the six weeks of working capital you would otherwise finance out of your own pocket.

What actually moves your rate

  • Flat vs. tiered. A tiered schedule prices the same invoice differently depending on how long it sits. Ask for the rate at 60 and 90 days, not just day one.
  • Recourse vs. non-recourse. Non-recourse costs more but moves the credit risk off you if the broker never pays. Free broker credit checks are the cheaper first line of defense either way.
  • Advance rate vs. reserve. Some programs advance a portion and hold the rest until the broker pays. CFX advances up to 98%, so most of the invoice arrives same day rather than in two pieces.
  • The fees around the fee. $30 wire fees on ten invoices a week is $15,600 a year — larger than a full point of rate on most fleets.
